Coal was pyrolyzed in N2 and CO2 in a fixed bed, a fluidized bed and a DTR. At low heating rates and temperature differences between N2 and CO2 are marginal. CO2 affects pyrolysis products in drop tube reactors. Differences between N2 and CO2 level off in FBR with longer residence time. CO2 favors formation of soot and aromatization of liquid products.
