The use of an AEM for MES results in stable bioproduction. With a CEM/BPM high product titers coupled to a pH drop reduce the productivity. HCO3&minus; is the main ion balancing the charge in a reactor with AEM. Salt buffer addition is not required with CO2/HCO3&minus; as buffer and carbon source. As the energy input can be decreased, a reactor with AEM appears most attractive.
