•: Sampling methods were evaluated for determination of fumarolic sulfur species.
•: Fixation of H₂S as Ag₂S(s), unsuitable for HCl detection, underrates H₂S and SO₂.
•: Fixation of H₂S as S(0) overestimates SO₂, but this phase is stable against O₂.
•: Fixation of H₂S as CdS(s) gives agreeable results, but CdS(s) is readily oxidized.
