Differential fMRI BOLD responses in amygdala in intermittent explosive disorder as a function of past Alcohol Use Disorder

IED is associated with hyperactivation of the amygdala in response to anger faces.

Previous studies suggest that alcoholism dampens amygdala AMYG responses to emotional stimuli.

In this study, IED subjects with history of alcoholism had a blunted amygdala response to anger faces.

Thus, history of alcoholism should be considered in the interpretation of emotional related fMRI studies.
