Hg, Pb and Zn were the main pollutants in the sediment of Erhai Lake. Trace metal pollution before 1900 CE was related to metallurgy activities. Regional atmospheric quality in Southwest China degraded since 1960 CE. Ore mining and smelting was mainly responsible for atmospheric trace metal pollution.
