Phylogeny of the most species-rich freshwater bivalve family (Bivalvia: Unionida: Unionidae): Defining modern subfamilies and tribes

Molecular phylogenetic analyses were conducted on 70 species of the Unionidae family.

Analyses were complemented with morpho-behavioral characters.

Phylogeny divided the Unionidae into 6 subfamilies and 18 tribes.

Three new tribes are described, Chamberlainiini, Cristariini, and Lanceolariini.

A new classification system is provided for the Unionidae family.
