The 6 major non-O157 STEC (6-STEC) include O26, O103, O145, O111, O121, and O45. In 2011, two slaughter plants in the Midwestern U.S. studied for 6-STEC. Real-time PCR (qPCR) was used to quantify 6-STEC regardless of Shiga-toxins. 6-STEC were quantified by calculating the prevalence and level of contamination. Study exhibits the use of qPCR to monitor 6-STEC in slaughter plant interventions.
