The widely used microplane model M4 for concrete was investigated computationally. The independent evaluation of microplane shear stresses yields inaccurate results. The model responses are sensitive to the strain increment and loading directions. A novel computational algorithm for the microplane volumetric stress is proposed. A method to eliminate the loading direction sensitivity of the model is presented.
