Transitional settling concentrations, TOF and LOSS were investigated. TOF and LOSS were found to characterize two effluent quality limitations. Sludge with a TOF value above 400 mg TSS L−1 suffers from poor macro floc formation. Sludge with a LOSS value below 1000 mg SS L−1 suffers from poor floc structure. Long SRT sludge can be used to bio-augment short SRT sludge to improve flocculation.
