A state-of-the-art review on applications of ionic liquids in oil recovery was presented. Few laboratory works show the effectiveness of ionic liquids in oil recovery. Ionic liquids can be used as alternatives of surfactants in enhanced oil recovery. Proper synthesis and development of active ionic liquids are necessary. Further experimental and simulation works are required for applications of ionic liquids.
