E-cigarettes represent a “disruptive technology” in nicotine and tobacco science. Through 2014, opinion articles on e-cigarettes were published as often as empirical research. Human subject research on e-cigarettes has been largely descriptive. Experimental and intervention studies of e-cigarettes are needed.
