•: subAB2 variants were investigated in caprine and ovine subAB2-positive VTEC strains.
•: About 60% of the caprine and ovine strains possessed the subAB2-1 variant.
•: All caprine and ovine strains, except one, were positive for the subAB2-2 variant.
•: Occurrence of both variants is not associated with higher risk of disease in humans.
