A geomechanical model of horizontal salt cavern gas storage has been developed. Feasibility analysis of using horizontal caverns for underground gas storage discussed. Design parameters for a horizontal cavern for underground gas storage are optimized. A new comprehensive index system to evaluate the safety of the horizontal cavern is introduced.
