Evaluation of the particle sizes of four clay minerals

文摘
Particle sizes of kaolinite, illite, Ca2 +-/Na+-montmorillonite were studied. Clay dispersions show trimodal PSD: primary particles (< 0.5, 1–2 μm), flocculi (~ 20 μm). Flocculi are resistant to disaggregation and hence counted in silt-sized fraction. Effect of different dispersion methods (e.g. ultrasound, dispersant) varies. A less polar solvent (e.g. alcohol) is needed for analyzing the PSD of swelling minerals.
