In recent decades sialoendoscopy has become more important in the diagnostics and treatment of obstructive salivary gland diseases due to technical developments and established treatment algorithms. Very fine endoscopes can be inserted into the duct of the salivary gland and allow a direct view of the underlying intraluminal pathology. Furthermore, special instruments, such as fine baskets for sialolith retrieval or grasping forceps can be guided into the duct and enable a direct intervention. There exist well established treatment algorithms in which sialoendoscopy is implemented following exhaustion of conservative treatment options. The success rate, assuming correct evaluation of treatment indications and technique, exceeds 85% and in recent years resection of salivary glands as salvage treatment with the corresponding surgical risks could be reduced to less than 5%.
