Efficient synthesis of a novel series of 11-amino-12-aryl-hexahydro-5-oxa-6,13-diaza-indeno[1,2-b]anthracene derivatives has been achieved by cyclocondensation of 2-amino-4,5-dihydro-4-arylpyrano[3,2-b]indole-3-carbonitriles and cyclohexanone in the presence of silica gel-supported aluminium chloride (SiO2–AlCl3) as catalyst under thermal conditions. Thorough optimization of the experimental conditions enabled significant rate enhancement and excellent yields. The starting 2-amino-4,5-dihydro-4-arylpyrano[3,2-b]indole-3-carbonitriles were obtained by one-pot triphenylphosphine-catalyzed multicomponent condensation of 3-hydroxyindole, malononitrile, and aromatic aldehydes. The structures of all the synthesized compounds were established by use of advanced spectroscopic techniques.
