文摘
This paper investigates the determinants of price dispersion betweendifferent goods in grocery retailing, as the result of pricing decisions ofmultiproduct retailers. Demand parameters are generated using the LESsystem. These are then used to test theoretical predictions about the natureof supermarkets' pricing and consumers' shopping behaviour usingdisaggregated data from the Italian grocery trade. The empirical resultsconcerning the supply function provide evidence for the existence, in alltypes of retail organisation, of a monopolistic form of pricediscrimination. The results are consistent with discrimination due to theexploitation of customers' switching costs.
