While a continuous decline in the incidence of cervical carcinomas in industrialized countries could be observed in recent decades, human papillomavirus(HPV)-triggered disease is still quite common in 3rd world and developing countries. Effective screening measures do contribute to this development by identifying precancerous and early lesions, thus, leading to successful therapy. In early stages, several organ-preserving surgical techniques exist. In advanced stages, a trend from radical surgery followed by adjuvant chemoradiation to only chemoradiation can be observed. At the same time, however, the importance of surgical staging has increased. Stage IV disease has a very poor prognosis, although advances in systemic therapy have been achieved in recent years.
