To ensure the realism of the visual effects, the 3D reconstruction of surgical instruments has become an important research topic in virtual surgery systems. In this paper, we propose a method for obtaining the model of the surgical instruments from point cloud data. The point cloud data are first triangulated using the Delaunay algorithm, and then the triangular mesh is simplified and smoothed for optimization. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we have reconstructed a scalpel model with experimental results show that the reconstructed model of surgical instruments can not only keep the geometric characteristics of the original model, but also improve the real-time property for the simulation.
