Publication behavior has always played a major role for the evaluation of scientific achievements of individuals, institutions, disciplines, faculties and universities. Nowadays, however, this evaluation tool is used in a more distorted way and with a one-sided emphasis on impact factors and citation frequency (Hirsch index). For Italy and Spain analyses of the publication behavior of forensic medical institutes are also now available. Based on the publication lists originating from the “Informationen der DGRM (German Society for Legal Medicine)- a publication analysis of the German Institutes of Legal Medicine was conducted and analyzed with respect to various variables (e.g. total publications, publications with impact factor, main topics, journals and Hirsch index). The number of published works per year increased particularly in the 1970s and 1980s but now appears to be relatively stable. This also applies to publications with an impact factor. The publication output varies considerably between different institutes, which affects the total number of publications, publications with an impact factor and the citation frequency of individual authors.
