摘要

The Wellington Formation [Permian] of Marion and Dickinson counties, Kansas, has been correlated with sections previously reported in Harvey and Sedgwick counties. This report is based on newly discovered sections. The top of the Annelly Gypsum is the field datum. Two major traceable zones were found, the newly discovered Ten Foot Bed bearing insect and conchostracan fossils, and the Forty Foot Bed bearing multiple clam-shrimp, and 4 component insect beds. Dunbar's Silicified Log Bed, a newly reported snail-ostracode and/or clam-ostracode bed, and 8 clam-shrimp beds were found to overlap the Forty Foot Bed insect horizons. Nineteen successive clam-shrimp-bearing beds (designated C 00 -C 17 ) were found to occupy the 60+ or - ft of Wellington exposed in the area of investigation. Two clam-shrimp beds (C 00 , C 0 ) were found in interbeds of the Annelly Gypsum in Sedgwick County. It was found that 4 conchostracan genera; Gabonestheria, Cornia, Protomonocarina and Curvacornutus, made their first appearance at the C 1 horizon. The oldest C-horizon in the area, C 00 , contained only Cyzicus (Lioestheria) harveyi. A silicified fauna of uncoiled fresh/brackish water snails, the Incrispellidae, n. fam., is illustrated and described. The first report of Wellington fresh water ostracodes, Gutschickia (2 new species), Cypridopsis (1 new species), Candona (1 new species) is made herein. New fresh/brackish water mollusks include: the pelecypod Permolimnia, n. gen., and the high-spired gastropod Lacotella, n. gen. Xiphosurans include: Paleolimulus avitas Dunbar, Dickinson carltonensis:, n. gen., n. sp., Permolimulinella raris, n. gen., n. sp., and Euproops? sp. A new conchostracan species is described and figured, Cornia separatis, n. sp. Reptilian fragments are assigned to Edaphosauras? minuta, n. sp. Carbonized wood/plant debris beds were found to occur at (roughly) 10-ft intervals above the datum, i. e., from 10 to 40 ft above the top of the Annelly, with several occurrences in the first 10 ft. It is suggested that this apparent periodicity may be a clue to a modified Dunkard type of cyclothemic deposition.
