The purpose of this project was to identify a funding source, design a program, and write a grant to develop a support group for adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The goal of the support group, which focused on the mental and physical well-being of individuals with RA, was to help them achieve a more productive and healthy life. An extensive literature review revealed the psychosocial needs of the target population and provided information on evidence-based practices that are best suited to assist this population. A support group design was developed focusing on: increasing positive coping skills; increasing the knowledge base of RA; increasing self-esteem, interpersonal exchange, empowerment, and self-expression; and increasing support systems. The Arthritis Foundation was the most suitable funder for this grant proposal. Implications for social work practice were discussed.
