The research examined the ability for hackers to spoof the navigation signals used by civilians and the U.S. military. By discussing the history and advancing technology of the navigation satellites, the different signals used for navigation purposes, and discussing the ramifications of spoofing on the users this was accomplished. Methods to spoof the navigation signals, methods to mitigate spoofing, and methods possible to prevent spoofing from moving from the laboratory setting to real world events are included. The results displayed military use of the P(Y) code that is encrypted preventing hackers from spoofing navigation signals, and current civilian signals are unencrypted and remain vulnerable to spoofing attacks. Civilian navigation systems used in the private and public sectors are vulnerable. Future civilian navigation signals allow for upgrades and additions to be made that include anti-spoofing measures to prevent spoofing capabilities. Conclusions discussed included recommendation of a separate encrypted signal for civilian use with the added precaution of notifying the user the navigation signal was being spoofed and allowing for addition precautions. In order to thwart a spoofing attack on a jetliner's onboard computer system, autopilot should be shut off.
