The purpose of this intervention experimental study was to examine whether comfort touch improved the perceptions of self-esteem, well-being and social processes, health status, life satisfaction/self-actualization, and faith/belief and self-responsibility in 45 institutionalized elderly female residents of the Southern region of the United States. Comfort touch was defined as skin-to-skin touch administered by the nurse investigator for the sole purpose of conveying and promoting comfort and did not include touch used for administering treatments. The Neuman Systems Model (Neuman, 1995) was the conceptual framework. The research variables represented the wholistic nature of Neuman's system variables. The literature revealed that comfort touch promotes comfort in most people but more research is needed to support the use of comfort touch in elderly female residents. Presently, there are millions of residents in nursing homes worldwide and almost 2 million in the United States. Many of these elders experience sensory deprivation to some degree. The age-related sensory losses are compounded by the lack of comforting touch in nursing homes. Further improvement of the nurse's role in holistic care to residents in nursing homes is critical for the advancement of nursing. The design was a cross-sectional, one-way repeated measures MANOVA. Four questionnaires were used to measure the research variables, which were administered three different times during the study. Three groups were used, two control groups and one treatment group. The treatment group completed the questionnaires and received social, verbal interaction, and comfort touch for 5 minutes, twice a week for 4 weeks by the investigator. Comfort touch was administered in the form of handshaking and patting the hand, forearm, and shoulder during the 5-minute social, verbal interaction period with the treatment group. Inferential test statistics included F tests produced by the multivariate analysis of variance, post hoc Tukey HSD, and power analysis. Level of significance was set at the.05 probability level. Reliability coefficients for internal consistency and stability were analyzed. Six hypotheses were tested. A significant difference was found for every hypothesis. Implications for practice, education, and research are presented.
